What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy is more than traditional talk therapy; it’s a journey into the subconscious layers of our mind. IFS helps us connect with the complex “parts” within us—subpersonalities that can drive our actions, thoughts, and behaviors for much of our lives. These parts, such as protector, manager, and firefighter parts, are often subconscious and tirelessly work to shield us from perceived threats, sometimes from experiences we may have long forgotten.
Many of us believe that every action, thought, or emotion defines who we are. But often, these responses are not our authentic selves. They stem from these subpersonalities within us, trying to keep our lives steady and safe. These parts have been essential for our survival and growth, often serving us in challenging times. Yet, there comes a moment when we must step into our authentic selves, leading our lives from a place of awareness rather than reaction. IFS is about understanding, collaborating with, and reorganizing these parts rather than suppressing or eliminating them.
Through my own IFS journey, I discovered a part within me I call “fighter girl.” This part was born in response to a traumatic incident when I was jumped by six girls in eighth grade. After that event, this fighter girl became a fierce protector, emerging unexpectedly—like the time in my 20's... I was out with friends and, unprovoked, began throwing receipts at the bartender. That "fighter girl" came out many times unexpectedly and I began to become shameful and not trust myself because I didn't know when that part would come out.
Once I began IFS therapy, I engaged with this part of myself. I learned that this fighter girl was still carrying the burden of that old trauma, fearing I was always at risk of being attacked. In her perspective, I was still younger, vulnerable, and needed her protection. But through the therapeutic process, I helped her see that I am now fully capable, resourceful, and safe. I assured her that I could call upon her strength if truly needed, and she agreed to no longer take charge unexpectedly.
This process wasn’t about erasing her but creating a collaborative understanding. She is still within me, ready if ever truly needed, yet I no longer have to worry about her impulsively influencing my actions. This is what IFS offers: a way to compassionately release the burdens our parts carry and to embrace a self-led life.
The Goal and Gift of IFS Therapy: Becoming Self-Led
The ultimate goal of IFS therapy is to bring us into a state of self-leadership—a place where we can fully trust, honor, and accept all parts of ourselves. This journey isn’t about changing who we are but about understanding the subconscious behaviors and patterns that often operate in the shadows. By shining light on these parts and the roles they’ve played, we can transform our survival instincts into conscious choices.
The true gift of IFS therapy lies in this shift. As we release the behaviors and identities we adopted just to survive, we make space for authentic growth, self-acceptance, and a life led by our core Self. In becoming self-led, we free ourselves from old burdens, enabling us to thrive beyond survival mode. This is the invitation of IFS: a path toward wholeness, alignment, and a life where all parts of us can work together in harmony.

Written by the founder of IFS, this book introduces the foundational concepts of IFS and its compassionate, inclusive approach to healing, emphasizing the idea that there are no “bad” parts, only parts with misunderstood roles.

This book is a more visual, approachable introduction to IFS. It’s great for those new to IFS as it offers illustrations and simplified explanations of the parts work process.

Another work by Schwartz, this book is more focused on self-discovery and personal growth, guiding readers through exercises and case studies to better understand their inner parts.

This popular book makes IFS accessible to individuals interested in self-guided therapy. It includes exercises and examples that help readers apply IFS principles to their personal healing journey.

While not exclusively an IFS book, Fisher’s work complements IFS well, especially for trauma survivors. She combines IFS with somatic approaches to help readers address trauma-induced parts and their healing.
